Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and taught her to use art as a method of expression. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash inside the house of one of the jury. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
